Hello! :)

My name is Emanuele Colombo. I am a professional motion designer and 2D animator. I appreciate your interest in learning more about my job!
Here’s a selection of projects that showcase my expertise in branding and motion guidelines and crafting motion for UX/UI. I hope you enjoy them!

Notion AI Assistant

In the spring of 2024, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Buck’s design team to craft a unique personality for Notion's AI Assistant.

We created a lively, interactive character that reacts dynamically to user actions, offering visual feedback tailored to what’s happening. This project transformed everyday interactions into a more intuitive, engaging, and human experience.

Whatsapp campaign

Working as part of the team at Hup Studio, I was tasked with creating the mnemonic for the Global Campaign. A mnemonic is a 'device' (image/symbol/glyph) that is used to trigger information. It acts as a vessel for an idea, a visual representation of a concept, like the flag of a country. The mnemonic was going to be the visual core of the campaign.

Although they were not part of a UX/UI project, these animations are a good example of how microanimations can enhance user interfaces.

OP/AL

OP/AL is a free resource that allows users to customize 100 code-based animated icons for ready-to-use implementation.
Here’s a case study of the project, where I have the chance to animate some of the icons.

G Summit 2024

I was approached earlier this year to craft the Motion Identity for Google Summit 2024, tasked with transforming the branding developed by Google’s design team into vibrant, dynamic animations.

The challenge was to infuse their sleek visual identity with smooth, tech-driven motion, enhancing the overall summit experience while maintaining the essence of Google’s iconic aesthetic. The result was a seamless integration of design and animation, elevating the energy and impact of the event.

Imperial College Rebrand

While not strictly a UX/UI project, the animation I created for the Imperial College rebrand demanded an unconventional approach for a marketing video. The client provided the brand identity designed by Pentagram, which I used to craft a narrative presenting the entire rebrand. This video became instrumental in defining the brand guidelines.

Kira

I partnered with Kira to absorb the new brand and refine the video script, shortening it to make room for visual storytelling.

With permission to push the boundaries of Kira’s existing brand elements, I created a motion language that took a fresh approach to graphics, sequencing, and storytelling.

The final film embodied Kira’s brand transformation, using modular shapes, interactive animations, and fluid transitions to turn a complex topic into a dynamic new experience.

Smartwatch Emojis

A famous watch brand reached out to me to create a few emojis and design UI tests for a smartwatch they were planning to produce. Unfortunately, the project never saw the light of day. Despite that, the memory of this little endeavor still brings a smile to my face.

Tolan UI Animation

Tolan is a children's app that leverages AI to create an interactive companion, much like a modern-day Tamagotchi. Kids can engage in numerous activities with their virtual friend. The design team approached me to help shape the animation style for the app's user interface.

My role was to develop a consistent motion language that matches the app's mood, focusing on both overall aesthetics and micro-animations.

One of the key elements I worked on was the animated interface for when the virtual companion shares a story. A circular container appears at the top of the screen, featuring the story title, a 'start' button, and a dynamic composition of animated geometric shapes and patterns.

Below, you can test some of the prototype I created

Tutorials for Fable

Fable, a browser-based animation tool, asked me to create tutorials to help users navigate its features. The aim was to make the platform accessible for beginners while providing value to experienced animators.

I focused on simplifying workflows, breaking down key processes into clear, visual steps. Each tutorial was crafted to highlight Fable’s potential and guide users through its tools effectively.

Tutorial for Bill.com

I was approached by Bill.com to create a tutorial explaining how their service works, all while staying true to their established brand guidelines.

The goal was to present the platform’s features in a clear and engaging way, making it easy for users to understand its functionality. I carefully integrated their visual identity, using their color palette, typography, and design elements, ensuring the tutorial felt cohesive with their overall branding.

Youtube Create Transitions

YouTube Create is an app designed to simplify video editing by providing users with intuitive and powerful production tools. In collaboration with Heatwaves and the YouTube team, I contributed to the development of a unique set of video transitions tailored for this app.

Our goal was to translate YouTube's motion and brand guidelines into cohesive video transitions, ensuring brand consistency while fostering user creativity. We used After Effects to create the animations, and Lottie and Skia to integrate them into the app seamlessly.
