Hello :)

My name is Emanuele Colombo. I’m a professional motion designer and I appreciate your interest in learning more about my job!
Here’s a selection of projects that showcase my expertise in branding, UX/UI and code based animation. I hope you enjoy them!

Notion AI Assistant

In the spring of 2024, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Buck’s design team to craft a unique personality for Notion's AI Assistant.

We created a lively, interactive character that reacts dynamically to user actions, offering visual feedback tailored to what’s happening. This project transformed everyday interactions into a more intuitive, engaging, and human experience.

Tolan UI Animation

Tolan is a children's app that leverages AI to create an interactive companion, much like a modern-day Tamagotchi. Kids can engage in numerous activities with their virtual friend. The design team approached me to help shape the animation style for the app's user interface.

My role was to develop a consistent motion language that matches the app's mood, focusing on both overall aesthetics and micro-animations.

OP/AL

OP/AL is a free resource that allows users to customize 100 code-based animated icons for ready-to-use implementation.
Here’s a case study of the project, where I have the chance to animate some of the icons.

Whatsapp campaign

Working as part of the team at Hup Studio, I was tasked with creating the mnemonic for the Global Campaign. A mnemonic is a 'device' (image/symbol/glyph) that is used to trigger information. It acts as a vessel for an idea, a visual representation of a concept, like the flag of a country. The mnemonic was going to be the visual core of the campaign.

Although they were not part of a UX/UI project, these animations are a good example of how microanimations can enhance user interface.

Delta Locals

Delta Locals is an initiative by Delta Airlines aimed at connecting travelers with locals to create authentic and memorable experiences.

As part of the development team, I joined as a motion designer to enhance the app’s UX/UI. My work involved crafting motion mockups to showcase how the app would function dynamically and defining motion guidelines to maintain consistency and fluidity across its various sections.

G Summit 2024

I was approached earlier this year to craft the Motion Identity for Google Summit 2024, tasked with transforming the branding developed by Google’s design team into vibrant, dynamic animations.

The challenge was to infuse their sleek visual identity with smooth, tech-driven motion, enhancing the overall summit experience while maintaining the essence of Google’s iconic aesthetic. The result was a seamless integration of design and animation, elevating the energy and impact of the event.

Imperial College Rebrand

While not strictly a UX/UI project, the animation I created for the Imperial College rebrand demanded an unconventional approach for a marketing video. The client provided the brand identity designed by Pentagram, which I used to craft a narrative presenting the entire rebrand. This video became instrumental in defining the brand guidelines.

Smartwatch Emojis

A famous watch brand reached out to me to create a few emojis and design UI tests for a smartwatch they were planning to produce. Unfortunately, the project never saw the light of day. Despite that, the memory of this little endeavor still brings a smile to my face.

Introducing Antimatter

A few years ago I founded Antimatter, an animation collective where I collaborate with other designers on projects that require a team. Think of us as a group of freelancers with the synergy of a full-time studio.

When a new project comes in, I select the designers from our network that best fit the skillset needed. This hybrid workmode allows our team to be a sort of plug-in motion partner to our clients, adjusting and adapting to whatever needs they might have.

We are official Rive ambassadors, meaning we’re often in touch with the software’s internal team. This is helpful whenever we have questions or doubts, as we’re constantly learning more about Rive and keeping up with new features.
Our team for this project would include myself, Stefano Malerba and Stefano Agabio.

I would act as the motion lead and Rive supervisor. This means I would not only animate, but also keep a close eye on the state machine and all of Rive’s features and details, making sure everything is working perfectly. Stefano Malerba and Stefano Agabio will focus specifically on animating in Rive, researching and building motion that adapts and flows smoothly across the screen.

Stefano Malerba is our incredible motion designer generalist, he has a great eye for visual graphics and is an expert in different softwares of animation.

Stefano Agavi is our trusted 2D animator, with a special talent for moving typography and a big passion for illustration.
